The ‘Ratcatcher’

My foray into endurance events began in 2012 with a 2 day adventure race called Scotland Coast to Coast. 105miles by bike, foot and kayak. It’s put on by a company called Rat Race Adventures and this is NOT a promo or sponsored post for them. All events referenced were self funded. I’ve entered and…

LaSportiva Akasha

I’ve used Brookes Ghost, New Balance Leadville 1210 and even Nike Lunars (when I first started) to run various ultras in the last 5 years but for 2015 and 2016 I made the switch to Hokas. Specially Hoka Rapa Nui Tr2 and I owned 2 pairs putting circa 1500 culmulative miles into them. But I…

Devil O The Highlands Footrace

On Saturday 5th August 2017 I faced the ‘Devil’ – a 42(ish) mile ultramarathon run on the West Highland Way from Tyndrum to Fort William. It’s the second oldest ultramarathon in Scotland after the West Highland Way Race and celebrated its 18th year this year. It’s fair to say that I did not prepare as…

Outrunning Obesity…and self destruction!

I finally got a copy of the August 2017 issue of Men’s Running magazine in which there is an article entitled ‘Outrunning Obesity’. It’s taken me a while to actually write this post, mainly because I wanted to gather my thoughts and do it justice without appearing over dramatic or sensationalistic. The morning I got…

How to have a vacation without regret!

You’ve worked hard, got yourself in great shape and fitness levels, have your next ultra in 6 weeks time but first……2 weeks vacation with the family! But it doesn’t have to mean no fun nor does it have to mean starting from scratch. Here’s a few tips and lessons I learnt on our recent family…

Am I Overtraining?

It’s a rhetorical question.  I know the answer.  Yes. My legs ache, I’m tired.  Resting HR is up.  I don’t want to go out and train. Ever get those days?  Weeks? Months? My training plan (see previous post) is balanced and has space for rest and recovery.  Okay, I’m wanting to do more than is…

My Core Nutrition

I’m pretty consistent with a core structure to my nutrition each day.  This is the basis around which I adapt my nutrition for training and pre races.   If I am aiming to lose body fat I dial down the number of snacks.  If I’m in a hard period of training, I increase them.  Simple….

June Training Plan

With a new hobby / cross training activity plus a 2 week annual vacation at the end of the month, a revision to the training plan was necessary. I’m currently in training for 2 ultramarathons  (41miles on Aug 4th, 33 miles on Nov 4th) AND for being able to pass my Roller Derby Minimum Standards….

A New Challenge

I’m a Roller Derby widower.  Like a golf or football widow, just a different sport and I’m a bloke. Vicky [wife] aka Brace Kelly 53 has been skating and bouting for 2 years now, even being featured in Woman magazine (UK). So if you can’t beat them, join them right? Except I’ve now got to…

Exercise Executive Stretch – Lessons in Teamwork and Leadership

Some 21 years since I left the Army, I was lucky enough to be offered a place on a 3 day field exercise run by the Army Reserve and specifically 4th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment. I’ve always felt that my military career was unfinished business.  Having gone through selection at 14 years old, joining the…

Kit List For Highland Fling

This is the list of kit I used for completing the 53 mile Highland Fling. I also wore a RatRace baselayer compression top underneath a Nike DriFit t-shirt. This will be the last time I wear Hoka Rapa Nui as I found they don’t have enough space in the toe area to prevent blisters of…
